Goldie Peters

May 17, 2009

Goldie Elizabeth Peters was born April 21st, 1910 on a farmstead near Beaver Iowa. She was the fourth of five children born to Jessie Mae Holmes Shipley and Thomas Clyde Shipley. Her mother died when Goldie was two years old, leaving her to be raised by her devoted father and older sisters. Her younger sister Mildred died in infancy and her older brother Bill was murdered in his youth by a migrant farm hand. Both older sisters, Ester and Lillian preceded Goldie in death. Goldie was baptized and joined the United Methodist Church at the age of 12, along with her two older sisters. Goldie remained devoted to the church all of her adult life. Goldie learned the meaning of hard work early in life as she pitched in to help with the rigorous household responsibilities and farm chores common just after the turn of the century. She also studied hard in school, graduating from Beaver High School in 1927 as the class salutatorian. Goldie was very proud of the beaver-skin encased diploma awarded to her upon graduation. Goldie married Bill Winchell in 1933. Side by side, they farmed, kept a beautiful farmstead, and raised two daughters, Mrs. Ivan (Ardys) Lindell of Sun City AZ and Mrs. Marvin (Barbara) Book of Jefferson IA. After her beloved Bill passed away in 1968, Goldie sold the farm and moved to Jefferson in 1970. Attending dances with her friends, Goldie met Eddie Peters in 1972. They married, continued to dance and enjoyed their winters in Texas. Goldie enjoyed attending the Naomi Circle of the Past Grands in Rippey and Rebekah Lodge in Jefferson. She was also a member of Residers and Friends Forever and greatly enjoyed her two bridge groups. She was especially proud of her six grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren. Goldie lived on her own until moving to the Jefferson Manor in June 2006. At the manor, she enjoyed the kindness of the employees, visiting with fellow residents, attending weekly church service, and winning often at bingo. Her grandchildren: Steve Lindell, Sandy Kramer, Bill Book, Michelle Gowdy, Mark Book, and Tami Lackey are grateful to have had the love and devotion of a wonderful grandmother for all these many years. Memorials are suggested to Iowa Hospice, Panora, Iowa.
