Lola White

Funeral services for Lola White, 92, of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, formerly of Jefferson, will be 2:00 pm Saturday September 8, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson, with burial in Jefferson Cemetery. Visitation will start at 2:00 pm Friday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson, with family present from 6-8 pm to greet friends at the funeral home. Lola White was born in Lake Park, Iowa on February 10, 1915 to Alfred Peter and Louise Margaret (Wunder) Schoellerman. Lola lived there until graduation from high school in May 1932. She attended Iowa State Teacher’s College (now U.N.I.) and graduated in 1934 with an elementary teacher’s certificate. She taught school the next 5½ years at Finchford, Salix, Jefferson and Longfellow School in Iowa City. On February 17, 1940 Lola married Carroll White in the Presbyterian Church at Lake Park and they made their home in Jefferson, Iowa except during World War II when Carroll was in the United States Navy. Lola lived with her mother in Los Angeles and worked at Northrup Aircraft at Hawthorne in the Engineering Department. In Jefferson, Lola assisted her husband in the White Laundry and Dry Cleaning Shop until they adopted two children: Richard Robert and Mary Louise. In November 1963, Lola was employed by the local United Methodist Church as their Educational Assistant until July 1973. During this time she attended summer school for 2 weeks at Drake in Des Moines, 2 summers at Claremont, California, and Wesley Theological School in Washington D.C. She was consecrated as a Lay Worker and Educational Associate in the United Methodist Church by Bishop James Thomas in June 1971 during the annual conference. In 1977 through 1979 she served as Parish Caller and called on shut-ins and older adults, remembering them on their birthdays and anniversaries. Lola was a member of the United Methodist Women, Friday Club, P.E.O., Federated Club and Garden Club and had served as an officer in each of those organizations. She was past president of P.T.A. and served on the Community Betterment Committee in Jefferson for six years. She did volunteer work in the Jefferson Garden Club, Campfire Girls, Community Chest and Cancer solicitation. Lola and Carroll enjoyed Elderhostel, traveling, playing cards and entertaining. She kept scrap books and photo albums for pleasure. She enjoyed gardening, education, quilting, sewing, flower arranging, church work, and family. After Carroll’s death in 2003, Lola moved to Mount Pleasant, Iowa where she enjoyed church and family activities. She died September 2, 2007 at the Henry County Health Center. She was 92 years of age. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, a brother William Schoellerman, and a sister Beverly Gulardo. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Louise Brown and her husband Russ of Burlington, IA; a son, Richard White and his wife Jeannine of Ridgefield, Washington; 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother Alvin Schoellerman of Newport, California.
