Margaret "Peg" Jongewaard

Services for Margaret (Peg) Jongewaard, 87, of Jefferson, will be 11:00a.m. Wednesday October 17, 2007 at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson, with burial in the Jefferson Cemetery. Friends may call at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday where the family will be present to greet friends from 6:30 – 7:30pm. Margaret T. “Peg” Jongewaard passed away On October 11, 2007. She was born on December 2, 1919 to Stanley Thompson and Alice Anderson on a farm near Yale, Iowa. She graduated from Yale High School and went on to graduate from Grinnell College. After college, she worked for Bankers Life Insurance Company in Des Moines, Iowa. On February 3, 1954 she married Albert John Jongewaard, Jr. in Holland, Michigan. They moved to Oakland, California and adopted two children in 1959. The family moved to Fairfax, Virginia in 1971, where Margaret continued to work for the government. After her children left for college, Margaret and John moved to Hong Kong where Margaret worked for the American Embassy. They moved to the Philippines in 1983, where she met Dori Flack, who was her good friend and companion. In 1987 they moved to Japan where John died. After leaving Japan, Margaret and Dori moved to South Africa where Margaret continued to work for the government. In September of 1990, Margaret retired and moved to Jefferson, Iowa, with Dori. For the next several years, Margaret traveled for enjoyment to many places around the world. On several of the trips her sister, Jean, traveled with her. When she was home she volunteered at the local hospital, the food bank, and the 4H club. She was loved by everyone who knew her. She is survived by her two children, Jean Ann Couperus and Nancy Alice Klingforth of Fort Collins Colorado, and six grandchildren, Christopher, Kaitlyn, Kevin (deceased), Douglas, Ryan and Kyle. She is also survived by her sister, Jean Abbott, of Medford Lakes, New Jersey, sisters-in-law, Jean Farr and Dode Jongewaard and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home at 119 West Lincolnway, Jefferson, IA, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson on Wednesday October 17, 2007 at 11:00 am, followed by interment in the Jefferson Cemetery, and then a luncheon served at the Presbyterian Church. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church or to the Greene County Medical Center.
