Virginia Henning
September 4, 1928 - July 16, 2016
Virginia Pauline Knight Henning was born September 4, 1928 at home in Coon Rapids, Iowa. She was the ninth child born to Harry and Dessie (Raygor) Knight. In 1947, Virginia graduated from Coon Rapids High School. She was united in marriage to Donald Rolland Henning on February 22, 1948. The wedding was held at Virginia’s parent’s home in Coon Rapids, the same home her father built, and where she had been born and raised. Virginia and Donald became the parents of two children: daughter, Geneva, who was born in 1949 and son, Darrell who was born in 1951. Through the years Virginia worked side by side with her husband, Donald, as they farmed from 1948 through 1989. The Hennings and their children traveled extensively through the years. They enjoyed many camping trips, and have very fond memories of summers at Leach Lake, Minnesota. Additionally, Virginia and Donald have traveled to all 50 states, Mexico, Canada and eight European Countries. For over 22 years, Virginia and Donald spent the winters in Harlingen, Texas. Virginia worked at Maranatha Skateland in Jefferson where she was cashier for seventeen years. She also hosted Ladies Skating on Tuesdays and helped with many skating parties, while Donald worked as the floor guard. Virginia was a member of First United Methodist Church in Jefferson. She was a Greene County Farm Bureau member and served in various offices on the county Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, including being past president. Virginia and Donald were members of the Greene County Campers, and were charter members of the Jefferson Sportsmen’s Club at Slininger Woods. On the national level, they belonged to a camping organization called the Good Sam Club. Virginia was a lifetime member of the Greene County Medical Center Auxiliary, serving as secretary, treasurer, and past president. Her hobbies include search and find word puzzles and crocheting. She also loved to play cribbage. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Donald, who died September 11, 2009; four sisters: Josephine Knight who died in infancy, Dorothy Stroud, Katherine Heiken, and Frances Kinman; and three brothers: Earl Knight, Clair Knight and William Knight. She is survived by her daughter, Geneva Rajski and her husband Dan of Princeton, TX; son Darrell Henning and his wife Kristy of Bondurant, IA; six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lyle Knight and his wife Betty of Coon Rapids, IA. Memorial Services for Virginia Henning, 87, of Jefferson, Iowa will be 10:00 am Friday, July 22, 2016 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jefferson. Burial will be at Scranton Township Cemetery, Scranton, Iowa. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
